Thales Future Cabin IFE Technology Demonstrator

For airlines exploring the next generation of connected cabin experiences, the challenge is rarely the technology itself. It is communicating its value clearly to the decision-makers. For Thales, that meant creating a way for sales teams to demonstrate future-facing passenger, crew and inflight entertainment solutions together inside a single, believable cabin environment.

Task

Create a high-fidelity, real-time aircraft cabin experience that would allow Thales sales teams to demonstrate future cabin technologies to airline executives and stakeholders through an interactive, configurable desktop application.

  • Strategy

Real-time 3D, Unreal Engine 5, Interactive Aircraft Cabin, Sales Enablement, IFE Technology Exhibition

  • Client

    Thales

Bringing future cabin technology into a tangible environment

Aircraft cabin technology is becoming increasingly connected, intelligent and passenger-specific. For airline stakeholders, however, the value of these systems can be difficult to communicate through presentations alone.

Neutral Digital developed a generic wide-body aircraft interior as a flexible demonstration platform, featuring both business and economy class environments. The cabin was designed to feel familiar and credible without being tied to a single airline brand, which created a neutral canvas for Thales to present its technology vision across different client conversations.

Built in Unreal Engine 5 for Windows machines with raytracing-capable hardware, the application combined high-quality real-time visuals with responsive interaction. Users could navigate through the experience using a menu system, select hotspots within the cabin, or trigger key sections via keyboard shortcuts, giving presenters the flexibility to guide each demonstration in the manner that best suited the meeting.

A configurable cabin for airline-specific storytelling

A key requirement was adaptability. The demonstrator needed to support different sales conversations, assisting Thales to align the cabin environment with the visual language, mood and expectations of the airline being presented to.

Neutral Digital created a set of real-time customisation features that allowed presenters to adjust cabin lighting colours, selected material colours and IFE interface feature colours. These controls make it possible to shift the atmosphere of the cabin quickly, curating the look of the experience to reflect the style or brand direction of a prospective airline client.

This adjustment transformed the application from a fixed technology demonstration into a flexible storytelling tool. Rather than presenting a single predefined cabin, Thales could adapt the environment around the conversation, making each presentation feel more relevant, personal and commercially focused.

Demonstrating a smarter, connected passenger experience

The application features a series of predefined interactive scenarios, each designed to communicate a specific onboard benefit – from improving crew awareness to enhancing passenger entertainment and personalisation.

Crew-focused interactions include handheld devices that give cabin crew an immediate understanding of aircraft status passenger call lights, luggage bin fill levels, cabin readiness and restricted area activity. Passenger-facing demonstrations include automatic IFE login through facial detection, personalised entertainment experiences, cloud gaming enabled by low-latency inflight connectivity, AR glasses with contextual information overlays, and live on-screen translation for captain and crew announcements.

The demonstrator also includes intelligent passenger experience behaviours that detect when a passenger has fallen asleep and respond by dimming suite lighting, pausing the IFE and activating a do-not-disturb indicator. Together, these scenarios shift the conversation from individual product features to a broader vision of a connected, responsive and more personalised cabin.

A portable platform for complex conversations

Neutral delivered the full interactive experience, which encompassed UX and UI design, unreal engine development, 3D cabin modelling, lighting, material setup, interaction design, animation and deployment.

The result is a polished, portable sales tool that allows Thales to demonstrate complex cabin technologies in a more immediate and memorable way, assisting airline stakeholders to understand not only what these systems can do, but how they could transform the onboard experience entirely.
